Is Tadej Pogacar The Man To Beat Again In 2025?
It has been another excellent year for Tadej Pogacar in road cycling. The world number one won two of the three Grand Tours in 2024, and he will be looking for success in 2025.
Road cycling fans will already be looking forward to the three Grand Tour events next season. Here is a look at whether Pogacar’s domination will continue, or if one of the Slovenian’s rivals can stop his domination.
Pogacar Relished the Tour de France Test
With three victories and two second-place finishes over the last five years, Pogacar’s record in the Tour de France is outstanding. The 26-year-old is often at his best for the grandest event in the sport, as he trains to peak for the 23-day challenge in July.
Pogacar is the odds-on favourite at 8/13 in the latest sports betting odds for the 2025 Tour de France. If victorious, he will become only the sixth cyclist to prevail four times or more.
The acca calculator suggests that Pogacar is just over 50/1 to win the Tour de France, Paris-Roubaix and Milan-San Remo in 2025. He will target those three races in the early stages of the road cycling calendar. The latter two are likely to prove the perfect preparation for another shot at the Grand Classification in the Tour de France.
Pogacar will also be the defending champion at the Giro d’Italia in 2025. He won the event on his debut in 2024, finishing with a time of 79hr 14’ 03”. The man from Slovenia led from stage two, and his rivals were unable to dislodge him from the top of the standings.
In what has been an excellent career so far, Pogacar has only once featured in the Vuelta a Espana. He finished third in the Grand Tour event in 2019. Now, six years on from that appearance, the UAE Team Emirates rider is a much better cyclist, and should he enter, he would have a great chance of completing the set in the three big events in the sport.
Jonas Vingegaard The Most Likely to Stop Pogacar
Dual Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard remains the biggest threat to Pogacar in 2025. Those two cyclists have created one of the best rivalries in the sport’s history. The Danish rider was second on the podium in Paris back in July.
When successful in the oldest Grand Tour event in 2021 and 2022, Vingegaard finished ahead of Pogacar, who had to settle for the runner-up spot in those races. The two men have dominated the top two spots in the last four editions of the race.
Vingegaard is at his best in the Tour de France during the mountain stages, as he is considered the leading climber in the sport. The Visma-Lease a Biker rider also holds the record for the highest average speed during the Tour de France.
Another threat to Pogacar in 2025 is likely to be from his fellow Slovenia compatriot Primoz Roglic, particularly in the Vuelta a Espana. The defending champion is a four-time winner of the event in Spain. He will make history next season if he wins the Grand Tour race for a fifth time.
The opening Grand Tour event of 2025 is the Giro d’Italia, which takes place between the 10th of May and the 1st of June.
