I can appreciate an old sock as a way to keep your hands clean. But most auto parts stores sell rubber gloves (Some craft stores do also) I keep a few in a small handlebar bag. Along with a few tools. When you take them off, just turn the greasy side in and take them home to dispose of them properly.
