The Tour De France 2024 Favourites: Could Jonas Vingegaard Be Stopped?

The biggest event of the professional cycling calendar is just months away and this Tour De France will be a special one as Jonas Vingegaard is going for a third title in a row.

Nobody has retained their initial honour on two successive occasions since Chris Froome in 2017, but Vingegaard is positioned strongly to match that in 2024.

A win for the Danish man would cement his position as one of the greatest cyclists of the modern era although there is an array of strong competition amongst the frontrunners this year.

Whether the title is retained or a brand-new champion is crowned at this year’s Tour de France, history will be made.

Vingegaard is the Tour de France Favourite

Vingegaard is seen as the favourite going into this year’s competition, he has been so dominant in recent years that it is tough to envision anybody beating him. Paddy Power sports betting offers the Dane at 5/6 and the betting tips suggest that long-term rival Tadej Pogacar will provide his strongest opposition.

In 2023 Vingegaard’s winning margin was over seven minutes and it would take a remarkable drop-off for anyone to push him all of the way to the end this year.

His first win in 2022 was somewhat of a surprise but last year he showed that without a doubt, he is the greatest talent in cycling.

Since the last Tour de France he has worked towards his upcoming second defence with a range of successful outings. Vingegaard added wins in the Tour of the Basque Country and the Criterium du Dauphine to his growing list of accolades – in the latter he impressively saw off Adam Yates in convincing fashion.

Tadej Pogacar is the Greatest Threat to Vingegaard

Pogacar has been Vingegaard’s biggest rival ever since the Dane prevented him from sealing three straight Tour De France triumphs in 2022. This year that rivalry could be renewed as Pogacar is seen as the biggest threat to Vingegaard’s further domination.

The Slovenian is offered at 11/5 to win the Tour de France in 2024 after finishing as the runner-up ever since Vingegaard became cycling’s big thing.

He won the Paris-Nice Race to the Sun last year in which he saw off Vingegaard himself as the Dane was condemned to a third-place finish behind Pogacar in first and David Gaudu as the runner-up.

Pogacar’s Danish rival certainly has off days but they don’t come often and it would be a massive shock if many came at the headline event this year.

Primoz Roglic Could Also Challenge The Frontrunners

Primoz Roglic is also expected to compete around the peak of the Tour de France rankings this year, he is offered at 11/2 to win the only leg of the Grand Tour that he lacks.

Roglic won the Giro d’Italia in 2023 and finished third in the Vuelta a Espana which proved he was still capable of competing at the top level going into 2024.

The 34-year-old from Slovenia has a huge advantage over Vingegaard and Pogocar in terms of experience and it would represent a fascinating story if he finally secured the title that he craves most.

Vingegaard ultimately should be expected to achieve legacy-defining success with a third victory, however, in cycling, nothing is guaranteed.

Pogocar and Roglic will undoubtedly push Vingegaard every step of the way, and they could even steal his crown if luck is not on his side in terms of fitness or if he gets any mechanical issues this year.
