I find this to be the correct approach to tackling any job, especially when it comes to bike repairs. I can only hope the old sock for the hammer was at least a clean one.

May I guess that you attached a length of PVC pipe to the basket?

The stray basket looks to have the appropriate holes and beefier wire frame construction too. Would a swap be possible? It's not stealing after all. Also could a couple of old leather belts from a thrift store have served as a more pliable way of attaching to the handle bars? =)
