With a screw driver you can also use the derailleur adjustment screws controlling the limits of lateral travel to have it stuck on the choosen gear !

i'd use a ELECTRICAL WIRE CONNECTOR, with a 4 screw system to connect electrical wires , you can get at radio shack.
a quick fix , when your all out of sturney and archer gear cables if you know what imean...it ill work perfect..to fix your gear or to fix your brake..
