mmm I find using a decent pump such as a Lezyne which comes with a hose does the trick :) A bit like those old pumps we had as kids but with a very modern and improved design.

That looks like it would be a great help but there is also the up-stroke and without a foot peg it seems this could still stress the valve. How about wrapping the pump head with velcro one wrap around the nearby spokes?

Michael Guthrie

Thanks for posting this, Hacks. John, for the upstroke I generally just keep a firm grip and some body weight on the pump with my non pumping hand. The extra weight/pressure keeps the stack of levers in place a little better too. Even when I had the Topeak pump that had a foot peg I never used it.

Eugene Sloane's ancient "Complete Book of Bicycling" used to advise you to avoid this problem by holding the pump horizontal, with the head firmly pressed against a tree, and the valve at 12 o'clock (pointing straight down). It works great, but I hate pulling a trailer with a tree in it ;-)
