My wife doesn't like the pokey pedals. She sometimes wears shoes that are thin-soled, or shoes that are fancy, and so she doesn't like the nubs digging into her feet or her soles.

ps

Could by trying to increase to increase the friction of the pedals

Well that hack will mean the pedal has a bias on which side is up. Maybe there is a clue there. I also see something sticking up on the right side of the photo on the pedal which would make me hesitant to use a bare foot on it.

I'd say is for barefoot riding. I ride barefood and I use flat pedals, but this seems to be a solution if one wants not to look for/buy a more adequate set of pedals. And btw, walking barefoot in NYC wouldn't be that bad...

Joe Cullin

Barefoot was my first thought too. Maybe leather soled dress shoes?

Chris K.

Maybe also helps with keeping ice off the pedals? And some shoes slip on metal pedals, no matter how "toothy" the pedals are.

Franch

It might be to prevent the feet from sliping while riding in wet condition. When you use shoes without grip its could be tricky even with thoses kind of pedals in metal

The spikes on those pedals rip up the bottoms of soles - that's been my experience. So if you were trying to avoid that, this would be a good solution.

They are using the big ring so maybe to soften the impact of the little spikes and bridge the gaps between the spindle and the platforms. =)

I would do it to prevent gashing my shins or achilles while walking the bike or during the bad mount I did yesterday.

I use the same method on my pedals as the spikes tend to rip the soles off most of my shoes (as wombatgrrl suggested). They also offer better support for smaller feet (ie- like when my girlfriend borrows my bike to go to work wearing pumps).
