While in Mexico, a bicycle I saw had a faded DVD as a rear reflector. I'm sure it didn't work any more since it was so faded, but I'm sure it reflected quite well when newer. Of course the bike was quite faded as you can see in the picture. By the way, they offered to sell or rent the bike to me while I was there. Our depressed economy is reflecting on their economy.
This is a good idea but I think a major shortcoming would be "directionality" - it would reflect very well at a specific angle, but not much if not aligned. Breaking it up into many pieces but still keeping it together somehow would be more effective. Think of how a purpose-made reflector is made up of hundreds of tiny reflectors at different angles.

Another problem is some states (like ohio) speciffically state you have to have white in the front and red in the rear.
