Gravity is pretty cool, as long as you treat it with respect. One cool aspect of gravity is when you can suspend yourself, for example by using a hammock - especially a Hennessy camping hammock! I have never seen the hammock concept used for a bike seat, that is until Josh sent us the following. He dubbed it the "butt sling" and I think it is an appropriate description. If others have seen such a concept used, feel free to comment or contact us for posting. Thanks Josh!

I saw this incredible seat at a Critical Mass event in Detroit last month. The woman who had it loved it and was getting lots of compliments on it. It seems to be a wide U shaped piece of tubing welded to a seat post with straps forming a sort-of "buttsling" covered by a hand-knit comfortcover. (new words I made up to convey the awesomeness of this thing). I have shown it to a couple friends who say that they've seen something like it before but it seemed like a new awesome Bike hack to me!

I sent you a picture about a year ago of a bike with a homebuilt PVC surfboard rack I saw in La Jolla. I'm thinking that this would make a perfect addition to the ultimate beach bike!

Everything old is new again Matt. I don't remember the name, but there was someone 20 or so years ago who made a sling type seat based on a set of rams horn handlebars placed upside down in the seat tube with the sling spanning the bar width.
Someone else here likely knows the name of the seat maker, though anyone can make their own.

Leo, you might be thinking of Dan Henry, who passed away in March just short of his 99th birthday according to Adventure Cycling magazine's June issue. There's an obituary here http://syvnews.com/news/local/cycling-legend-dan-henry-to-be-buried-friday/article_819c0e80-6d7b-11e1-bb46-001871e3ce6c.html with a photo of one of his sling seats. He also invented what came to be known as Dan Henry Route Marking System.

This reminds me of the Danish bikes made in Christiana. They sport a completely different type of bike geometry than our standard triangles. And, sling style saddles. I thought for sure this post was going to show a modified Pederson style seat. Check 'em out, http://www.pedersen-bike.dk/pedersenbikes.htm

Thanks MLC40, I knew there'd be someone reading who knew what I was referencing. Great story about the inventor. Back in the day, I can't imagine where the pilot would PUT a bicycle on a commercial airplane!
The Pedersen seats, I forgot about those Frankenbent bikes ;-) They are cool looking and I wouldn't turn down a chance to ride one though.
I guess you could call those 'thong' seats more than sling seats :-)
