Ammo Pouch Bike Saddle Bag

Reader Tony sent us this great little hack.  If other readers have come up with hacks that help to carry stuff and fight theft, feel free to pass them along.

I bought a used military ammo pouch for a couple of bucks, then took a broken SKS rear fender and removed both the front and rear part of the fender, keeping the middle part that attaches to the seat post. Then I used a piece of irregular left-over plastic from some discarded electronics and some plastic straps to affix the ammo pouch to the fender part.

Finally, I used even more plastic straps to fasten one part of a backpack buckle to the ammo pouch and the other part of the buckle to my saddle. The ammo pouch bag holds three tire levers, one small bottle of lube, a spare inner tube, a waterproof saddle cover and a set of Allen keys.

It can be attached in a few seconds and is just as easy to de-attach. This comes in handy on my commuter bike where I need to carry tools and prefer to keep them separated from my other stuff.

When I park my bike at work I bring the tools with me to keep them from getting stolen and then I re-attach the bag before I ride home. As an additional bonus, the pouch bags can be opened and closed very quickly and easily since they're made to be very user-friendly.

Awesome use of the broken bits and govt. surplus. gotta love the mixed stream recycling. The quick release is great for taking valuables with. I use a hard ammo can but cant take it with so I'm looking for a way to lock the can.

I poke a couple of holes in the ammo bag at the same width as the rails, then feed a ziptie in, around a dowel, then back out. A little electrical tape around the rails keeps the bag from sliding forward on the rails.

This bag can be useful to all bikers because a lot of your stuff can be placed there. It is user friendly, easy to de-attach and the pouch can be open and closed very quickly.
