Memories of my early childhood are sparse, but I do often fondly recall my time spent on a Big Wheel. I can remember first getting it and pedaling furiously around my cul-de-sac. I remember speeding down inclines and letting the pedals spin freely. And I remember the sad moment when all my braking caused a flat spot in the front wheel and my ride front that point on was marred by a "thump, thump, thump." That old Big Wheel is probably occupying a small space in land fill this very moment and will "live" a lot longer than I.
I got my Big Wheel in a box from a store as I am guessing most people did. How cool would it be to have your own Big Wheel custom built for you? Well, reader Patrick and his friend Jason decided to construct a Big Wheel from left over parts from several bikes and a golf bag cart. All text and pictures below are credited to Patrick.

I designed and built this big wheel with a friend of mine Jason. The inspiration came from finding an old folding golf bag cart (still folds for compact storage) at a local recycling center. The rest of the big wheel was fabricated from three other kids bikes...including a little mermaid bike (nice wide white front wheel).
The most challenging part of the build was figuring out how to fix the cranks to the wheel and fork still allowing for changing the front tire in case of a flat. Some of the pictures included show the first test run to prove fit, the frame before painting, test run after paining and final upholstery of the seat in white vinyl. The entire build involve just over 20 total hours of time with a Mig welder and some pretty simple tools.

The final shot is brilliant! Another bike related smile.

This site is excellent and so is how the subject matter was explained. I also like some of the comments too.Waiting for next post.
