As the temple pieces are tied to the brakes, too, the glasses also might be a braking light - one pull on the lever switches them on, a second off.

I have a pair of glasses similar to these. The lights are along the entire frame - the bulbous ends are battery storage.

At first glance I thought it was for tension to pull the brakes back open.
