I ride in Cd. Juarez (right across the border from El Paso) and we also have goatheads, it's hard and expensive to find anti puncture strips and liners, so much so that I´ve never seen them in the city. I will definitely try this.


The first soft body-armor style bullet-proof vests were made with seat belts; they eventually used seat belt nylon before the utilisation of kevlar. I know because I used to work for the company.


Its a good idea. I was thinking layered cordura. Anyone know what snake chaps are made from? Its not liquid or poly. By having multiple layers of 1000D cordura instead of a solid seat belt, it may allow the barb or thorn to change directions instead of going straight through a single weave. Sewing the edges of the cordura and then turning it inside out would get rid of any abrasive thread. A lot of the complaints I've seen about the poly tire liners is they cut the tires sometimes. 6 Layers of uncoated 1000D Cordura is 2.3 mm some poly liners are 3.3 mm thick. 6 layers of cordura is some tough stuff. Someone in this thread doesn't want anyone thinking DIY probably has a steak in liners!


I'm now curious as to the effects of the thread actually being on the tube. Probably not that bad if you don't back stitch a messy knot. This would keep you from having to turn the cordura liner, (which is now a tube sewn on both sides)inside out which increases the side bulk. Sewing 8 layers of cordura would be better with the layer next to the tube having the waterproof poly coating. This would allow a slight buffer for the thread to sink up in slightly. If you was wanting a 3 inch wide liner over all including some on the side. Staggering the widths of the layers, keeping all centered, such as 3 inch wide with the next 2.75" then 2.5", as an example, could be smaller increments. This would give you a taper so as not to have a bulky edge. Just don't put seems in the middle. It should be as easy to put in a tire as thick stiff poly. If that doesn't do it, slip in a thin strip of kydex between the layers and use less air. Or just sit back in your office with a cigar and pee on others thoughts.


Also, using a fabric called slip-not which is a tacky fabric used on a lot of glove palms, could be used on the tire side of the codura sandwich. It would not provide puncture resistance, but act to hold the liner in place (a little better) against the tire while mounting and create thickness. Just a possibility to experiment with.
