Americans like their beverages cold. I work with someone that grew up in Europe and it seems that not a shared meal can pass without her mentioning that Americans are spoiled and that drinking water that is room temperature allows you to hydrate more quickly.
Even if this is true, during or after exercise I prefer my beverages cold. Not ice cold, I have never understood that term. Ice is a solid so how can you drink an ice cold beer? If it was ice cold it would be a beer popsicle. Anyway . . .
Reader Ted, who sells unique bike accessories over at Stone Cold Outdoor, agrees with me and sent us a cooler bag to review. Ted wrote the following about the bag -
It a cool way to make a bicycle ride more fun. I use mine to go to the grocery store, too. I created it because I like to do all day rides in the country.
During one ride on a hot summer day in the Flint Hills of Kansas we ran out of water and had to ride about 3 hours before we got back to town where we could get a drink. I soon discovered that taking beer or wine was really fun, too. Everything stays clean and cold. Nice.
Obviously, the beer pannier is useful for anything you want to carry while biking.
Here is a picture of the bag as it came out of the box.
In addition to the main compartment is has an outer pocket meant for various items like keys, wallet, phone, etc. There are also mesh pockets on each end. It came with a velcro strap that can be used to keep it from moving around as well.
This gives you an idea of size. The bag is slightly taller than a standard beer bottle and three fit comfortably. A full six pack of bottles certainly could be coaxed into the bag.
Here you see that six, sixteen ounce cans of water fit fine. There are four cans on the bottom standing up and two will fit on top if placed horizontally.
And here is the bag on my bike - not bad looking and it has some meaty hooks on the back to keep it secure.
I could have used this bag last year when I went bike camping. I wrote about how we used a cheap promotional beer cooler bag that actually worked very well. Check out Stone Cold Outdoor for a square bottle that is meant to maximize space in the bag.
If you like your beverages cold and have ideas to pass along, send us an email and we would be happy to post.

I use one of those Hot/Cold bags when I go shopping on the bike. This does seem a more practical design for the bike though.

The Igloo Maxcold softsided cooler also fits perfectly inside a grocery bag pannier.

I've got a Axiom Cortex rack trunk that is insulated and does a good job of keeping stuff cold.
