It is not uncommon for me to stumble upon a bike that is hacked to accommodate an extra rider. In a recent post for example, I wrote about the addition of a rear seat on a single passenger bike. Less common is spotting a bike that has been hacked to accommodate two additional passengers. NYC is a great habitat to spot just about any hack imaginable so I was not shocked to recently stumble upon this three passenger bike –
As is easy to see, the hacker has wrapped some foam around the top tube for a front passenger of pint sized proportion. And on the back there is another seat.
You might ask what leads me to the conclusion that this is meant to be a passenger seat. Good question, and I believe you will find the answer in this photo –
Yes, these hacked foot pegs would make it seem that the rear board is indeed meant to carry a passenger on the rear as well. The one question that naturally comes to mind is, why isn’t there any foam on that board? It seems that without some sort of cushion, the rear passenger would not be a happy camper.
