I have often been scolded by my wife for ogling, but not the type of ogling you might expect. It is not uncommon for me to ogle bikes as I walk and I have been known not only to stop and stare, but to take pictures. Often times my wife will not notice my ogling until she figures out I have stopped and she has to look back for me. I often get scolded for stopping too often to stare at bikes, looking for hacks riders have employed.
My ogling is not limited to NYC. I travel quite a bit and anytime I come across a parked bike I will give it a quick seat to tire evaluation and determine if it’s worth further investigation. Whenever I am walking with my wife and approach a large group of bikes locked up her grip will often tighten on my hand because she knows I will want to veer off and ogle but she does not want me to get sidetracked.
I travel to D.C. quite frequently by train and there are a few bike racks out in front of Union Station that I will often stop at to kill time and ogle. I wasn’t disappointed on a recent trip. I stumbled across a hack that has been featured on this site before - a bike parking brake of sorts. Here is the bike . . .
You can accomplish something similar with a Velcro strap. Another hack that suits this purpose for STI levers is a wine cork.
