i think the concept stuff is fun. it may not be practical, but just by doing something different for the sake of doing something different, maybe they'll hit upon something that works better than it did before.

think about concept car designs from the 50's and 60's. they still look funny and futuristic, despite looking very dated. but some of those outdated cars actually had features or designs that are now standard features in production.

without the unabashed creativity that designers have and play with for something like a concept bike, who's to say how stagnant any industry would be.

Thinking about the early development of the bicycle from the velocipede/draisine and the French involvement (what an understatement), it would be kinda poetic for a (French :-)revolutionary design to shake things up. Could be, though, just as sharks have naturally retained their basic form for 100s of millions of years, the bicycle has attained its perfect geometry...
