A heartbreaking site that is far too common in NYC, especially during the winter, is one such as the following.
There is a dearth of "official" bike racks in the city and thus people end up using objects like this parking notice pole that are right on the curb. Many official bike racks are also near the curb and thus when a car is parking, a snow plow is plowing, or a delivery truck is backing up, a bike parked near the curb will fall victim to motor vehicle assault. The most common injury is the taco rim you see above. A moment of silence please.
To add insult to injury, this bike also suffered an attack by a vandal. Talk about kicking a person while they are down. Check out the carnage and tell me it does not bring a tear to your eye. Think of the forethought. Someone would have to possess wire cutters of some acclaim to do a jobbie like this. Premeditated for sure.
I guess vandalism is a common occurrence because someone taped this plea to the top tube.
It's a sad thing to see, but you have to give it to the author - even in this time of sadness s/he said "Please."
