At least they locked their bike appropriately.

Color me puzzled -- why would somebody cut the spokes like that? It would have been obvious that that wouldn't free up the rim, if they were thinking of stealing it.

Pure maliciousness? Or is there actually a reason (however nefarious) for something like this?

(Now I want to go down to the bike cage and pet my bike. It's okay, sweetie, I'll try to keep the nasties with wire cutters away from you...)

The only logical reason to cut the spokes like that would be to steal the front hub, but even then that hub is nothing special. Not to mention the fact they left it behind.
